Cardio is a dreaded word. In fact, cardio is most often the factor that is left out of exercise regimes. I’m not sure if this is because most people think that cardio will only hinder muscle gain, or if it’s because slogging through a jog isn’t necessarily anyone’s idea of a leisurely activity. But that feeling of pure exhaustion after a cardio routine is integral to fitness progress, and this isn’t just in terms of weight loss. There are wide ranges of benefits to cardiovascular exercise that go way beyond simply losing weight!
Heart Health:
It’s
in the name! Cardio is extremely beneficial in improving the condition of your
heart. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia alone. So of
course, just like any other muscle, the heart must be worked!
Management of Diabetes:
For
those out there with diabetes, cardiovascular exercise is instrumental in
aiding the condition. As the exercise increases your ability to utilise
glucose, regular exercisers will maintain better control over their blood sugar
levels, as opposed to those who don’t exercise.
Increased Metabolism:
Depending
on how intensive your exercise regime is, your metabolic rate will increase
significantly. In the long run, this means that it is easier to not just lose
weight, but maintain it too!
Stress Relief:
Ever
heard of delayed gratification? It’s true that cardio isn’t pleasant. But it
certainly pays off! Performing cardiovascular exercise releases ‘feel good’
hormones in the body, that allow you to become happier and have a more positive
outlook.
Better skin:
You
may not have heard of exercising your way to better skin, but it’s a fact that
exercising is one of the ways that a healthy glow can be achieved! By
increasing the blood flow when doing cardiovascular exercise, the circulation
helps to nourish skin cells and keep them vital.
So
what are you waiting for? Get running!
