Thinking about trying a 'Teatox'? Think again.

By Paige Newman

'Teatoxes' are one of the newest crazes sweeping the fitness industry, that promise overnight weightloss, an improvement in health and wellbeing, and claim to rid your body of nasty toxins, leaving you feeling energised, fresh, and slim.

If you have a Facebook or Instagram account, there's no doubt that you would have seen numerous fitness and health bloggers promoting and praising these teatoxes, to whom they attribute their lean and slender physiques. I personally see sponsored teatox ads targeted at me while browsing through my social media feeds all the time, as I must apparently fall into their target market of young and vulnerable women who want a quick and easy way to lose weight and 'tone up'.

It all sounds really great and easy on paper - drink this $60 tea two times a day for two weeks straight and voila - you'll lose five kilos just like that. There's testimonials all over Instagram from girls who have tried this and got these 'amazing' results, just search the hashtag #teatox and you'll see what I'm talking about.

What these girls, and what many people don't know is, that the way that most of these teatoxes result in such amazing weightloss is by acting as a laxative, flushing your system of water and nutrients. leaving you dehydrated and 5kg lighter without all of the water that your body would normally be carrying as part of it's normal, healthy functions. Sure, you might have a flatter stomach and look visibly 'leaner', but this is no different to the kind of weightloss that you might experience as the result of a gastro bug - you won't feel well, it's not healthy, nor is it sustainable, and nor will the results last when you stop taking it.

Moreover, there is no need to 'detox' and flush your body of 'toxins' - you have a perfectly good liver that is more than capable of flushing any unwanted nasties from your body for you. And sure, not all of these teas contain laxatives or are detrimental to your health, but I can guarantee you that you are still being overcharged for a concoction of  herbal teas that aren't any more magical than the ones you can by from the supermarket. If you really want to reap the health benefits that tea can offer (and yes, there are plenty, which deserve a whole post to themselves), I recommend that you save yourself the $60 you were going to spend on 'Skinny Tea' and make a trip Woolies, or T2 if you're feeling fancy, and stock up on peppermint, fennel, and liquorice teas, which will help with bloating and digestion and hydrate you without the nasty side effects.
