Are you a morning person, or a night owl? 10 benefits of waking up early

 By Miriam Fitzgerald

We all know that there’s nothing more disheartening than being woken from your slumber by the screech of your alarm at 7, 6 or even 5am. But if you’re willing to give up a sleep-in for the sake of waking up early, it’ll leave you with more hours in the day and can allow you to accomplish your fitness goals much faster, as well as having a positive effect on your mental wellbeing.

The benefits of waking up early

1.     In 2008, biologist Christoph Randler discovered that early risers are more proactive. In fact, research showed that they were more likely to agree with statements such as “I spend time identifying long-range goals for myself” and “I feel in charge of making things happen”
2.    Randler’s research also revealed that morning people are more likely to anticipate problems and minimise them efficiently, which leads to more success in the business world
3.    Experts agree that going to bed earlier and waking up earlier allows for a much better sleep, as your body is more in tune with the earth’s circadian rhythms. So avoid those long Netflix binges that go well into the late hours of the night, and hit the sheets instead!
4.    Morning people can better use their quiet time for organisation, goal-setting and planning out their days and weeks ahead.
5.    Early risers have much more time to exercise, whereas those who wake up later in the day may have trouble fitting an exercise regime in their schedules.
6.    Studies have shown that morning people are often more positive, more optimistic, and are more likely to feel satisfaction in their lives than night owls.
7.    The commute is much less congested in the early hours of the morning, which allows for a much more stress-free ride to work.
8.    Snoozing late into the day often means missing breakfast. This is definitely a bad idea, as eating breakfast is the foundation to good eating habits. Waking up early also gives you time to prepare a delicious, much more nutritious breakfast that will sustain your focus throughout the day.
9.    Waking up early correlates with better grades. A study conducted by Texas University found that students who consistently woke up early each day scored better test results and overall grade points.
10. Willpower is strongest in the morning. Choosing to devote the early hours of the morning to exercise, strategic thinking, creative work, your diet and nurturing relationships means that you’ve devoted your most focused hours to these activities before most people even have breakfast.
