Women and weightlifting - yay or nay?

By Paige Newman

We've all seen those photos of female bodybuilders with huge muscles and masculine physiques that you might mistake for a guy if it weren't for the fact that they're wearing a bikini and have long hair. There is a HUGE misconception that if you, as a female, lift anything heavier than those hot pink dumbbells at the gym, you'll end up looking like this.

The truth is, in order to get this big and this ripped as a female, you pretty much have to be taking perforance-enhancing drugs (read: steroids) as the female body does not produce enough testosterone naturally in order to facilitate this kind of muscle growth. Some women are able to get this big naturally, but this takes the right genetics and extreme discipline, with consistent training, lifting extremely heavy, and being absolutely on-point with your diet, over a number of years in order to even get close to having a physique this muscular. The point to take away from this is that you're not going to grow huge muscles overnight and end up looking like a man if you start lifting. Muscle growth in women is slow, and does not even occur naturally in men as fast as you'd think.

There are SO many benefits to lifting weights, and lifting heavy. Aside from the many health benefits and becoming strong and feeling badass when you're the only girl in the weights area, aesthetically, you can shape and contour your body, add definition, and tighten up everywhere. Want a bigger booty, defined hamstrings and shapely quads? Do squats. Want abs? Do compound lifts that engage your core like no sit-up ever will, such as deadlifts, pull ups, squats, dips, and bent over rows - these will strengthen and add definition to your whole body, not to mention burn a tonne of calories. Want defined shoulders? Get on that military press! But make sure you go heavy - i.e. choose a weight that you can not lift for any more than 8-12 reps - that's when the magic happens. There are SO many exercises that you can do that work your whole body and will change the way you look more than any bodyweight cardio workout you've ever tried. Take a look at the absolutely gorgeous Nikki Blackketter (photo from her IG) and tell me that you don't have serious body envy. You'll see from her YouTube channel that her main form of exercise is lifting weights, and she sure as hell doesn't look like a man.

I hope that was enough to convince you why lifting isn't such a bad idea. And seriously - it's fun, and rewarding, and makes you feel empowered. Give it a try and see what you think!
